“I can’t get over that, you know.” Her breathlessness brought a touch of a smile to his lips.
“Get over what?”
“You treat me like I’m precious.”
He allowed his fingertips to linger against her skin as he pushed her hair back. “You are. Hey.” He kissed her temple. “That’s not supposed to bring tears to your eyes.”
“I can’t help it.” She lips turned up in a trembling smile, one that melted his heart. “I don’t know if I’ll ever get used to someone treating me like I matter, like I’m not some horrible human who they only want something from.”
“I want your happiness. Does that count?”
She wrapped her arms tightly around his waist and rested her head against his chest as she held him close. He couldn’t find words at that moment, the ones that would tell her that she did the same for him, that she made him feel alive, warm, safe.
Loved.
Even though she’d never said the words to him, the same words he was still learning to accept despite believing he was unworthy, he felt loved.
He held her close, reveling in emotions swirling within, warmth and comfort chiseling away at words yelled at him in anger, in rage.
Can’t you do anything right?
You are such a waste.
Maybe if you were more like Brian, you wouldn’t be a disappointment.
Just get out of my face. You make me sick.
But Frank’s voice was nowhere to be heard when Catherine turned her face and left a kiss over Brody’s heart. “I’m so happy that you’re in my life.”
He inhaled deeply, her soft floral scent permeating his senses, and he left a soft kiss in her hair. “You’re the best thing that’s ever happened to me, Cat. Ever,” he added before he pulled back and lifted her chin with his fingertips. Their eyes met, searching for the confirmation that this was real, that they each had meant what they said. He leaned down and rested his forehead against hers and lifted his lips in a whisper of a smile. “Tiny and fierce, that’s you. When you care about something or someone, nothing stops you. I’ve always admired that.”
“Always?”
There was a hint of sarcasm in her voice that made him laugh softly.
“Even when I was a raging bitch?”
“Like you were so enamored with me when we first met.” He kissed the tip of her nose as she crinkled it. “And that is so fucking adorable.”
“My nose?” She giggled as he kissed it again.
“That expression.” He dropped a soft kiss on her forehead. “Everything about you. The way you move… it’s mesmerizing.”
Her head tilted to the side. “How so?”
“Every movement flows together with ease, with grace. It’s…” He gazed up at the ceiling trying to gather his thoughts, the right words as his heart urged him on. “It’s everything, Cat. From the way you walk to the way you do a cartwheel or a handstand, to the way you climbed that tree in my back yard. I don’t think you realize that confidence—you know, the thing you swear you don’t have anymore—it shows. And it’s a beautiful thing. You’re beautiful. Everything about you is,”
His words were cut off as she kissed him with such gentleness that his own eyes stung with unshed tears, the way hers had.
Was this really love?
Or would she turn against him in his time of darkness, when he needed her the most?
